“Why do you want to do a PhD?”
I found myself searching for the answer to this question during an interview with a potential supervisor. My reply was typical like many other grad students:
“I want to climb up the academic career ladder, become a professor and help more students with their research!”
I am not sure what impression my response gave to the supervisor, but I am sure of something. I had a rethink about my PhD goal and what else I could do with a PhD outside academia.
Yes! Getting a PhD is great. It comes with unique skillsets and expertise that are valuable across many industries. Thanks to Gertrude Nonterah, a valuable connection I found on LinkedIn, here are high-paying job roles for PhD holders who hope to go beyond “Professing”.
